Look, I love a good Friends rerun as much as the next girl, but I’m SO tired of seeing this gif everywhere.
Basically, I’m Chandler at this point.
Everyone, everywhere is telling you that you have to pivot, but I’m going to disagree.
You don’t need to pivot.
The business idea you had three months ago is still relevant and needed today.
Three months ago, if you had asked me what would happen if my family were suddenly forced into lockdown, I’d have told you that Daphne would write her own schedule, Henry would have struggled to find himself, and Audrey would have rolled with the punches.
Well, one out of three ain’t bad, right?
Basically, nothing has been predictable here. Henry is getting up on time, sitting down to do focused work, and loving the one-on-one teaching time. He’s crossing things off his list, owning his schedule, and just rocking out this homeschool thing.
Daphne? Not so much.
In fact, the first three days of school at home had BOTH of us in tears. We were so frustrated — with the situation, with each other, with our reactions. It was not pretty.
But the solution wasn’t to pivot.
It’s not like I could just decide, Okay, we’re going to focus all of our time and attention on Henry and let Daphne just not do second grade.
Instead, we needed to adapt.
That’s different from pivoting.
When you pivot, you change directions. It’s about strategy.
When you adapt, you adjust to a new situation.
As a family, we needed to adjust to our new situation and figure out how we could work together effectively.
Forget seven hours of school. Instead , we’re concentrating on the things that matter most, that move the kids forward — and keep our family on track.
I’ve started getting up at 5am to get my most important work done before the kids are up. That way, when I sit down to “do school” with them, I’m not worried about my own deadlines.
We’ve figured out that Daphne works better on some assignments with Justin, so we’ve changed our schedule to make that possible.
You don’t need to change direction in your business and come up with a completely new strategy.
You need to figure out how to adjust your business and your goals to this new situation. Maybe that means working from 5-8 am, like I am. Maybe that means re-instituting nap times for your kindergartner to ensure you have some downtime during the day. Maybe that means going off mom duty at 6pm and letting your partner handle bath and bedtime so that you can get your client work done then.
It doesn’t mean that graphic design or data entry or copywriting or bookkeeping is no longer a viable option and that you have to change what you’re offering your clients.
Don’t pivot.
Adapt.
