Do you know who to turn to in a pinch?

What a comforting feeling, knowing exactly who to call when you need help.

Back in October, I experienced this firsthand.

I got really sick right before Freelance to Freedom Weekend. We had been planning for months, and I wanted to push through it so badly, but my body just wasn’t having it.

Unfortunately, there was literally only one weekend on the calendar that I could move the event to, but it meant that two of my essential team members would be out of town and unable to assist.

The only way I could host a successful event for hundreds of aspiring freelancers was with help.

Without even skipping a beat, I was on Voxer (a super cool walkie-talkie app used by a lot of virtual business owners) with my student Amanda Engler.

If she was available that weekend, I could make the announcement the event was being postponed with confidence.

Why? Because Amanda is darn good at virtual event planning and even without working on the event prep, I knew she could step in and do her thing so that I could do mine.

(In case you’re wondering, she was available, my body healed, my team members went on vacation, and Amanda saved the day and the event was a massive success.)

Now Amanda is pretty well known in the digital space for her event savvy, but guess what? She actually started out her Free Mama story as a Virtual Assistant.

It wasn’t until she niched down and discovered that she could use her years of hospitality experience to her advantage that she became a well-known name.

And just in time, because virtual events have become a multiple-industry phenomenon thanks to the global pandemic.

Social media managers: it doesn’t have to be this way


When I first started my freelancing business, I was providing social media management to small business owners.

Being a SMM back in 2014 looked quite a bit different than it does today…

But once you declare you are a VA, you have to pick a specialty, which is where a lot of Free Mamas struggle.

A niche isn’t just “copywriting” it’s “writing email sequences for ActiveCampaign” it’s not just “Management” it’s “project manager specializing in Asana”. These are just examples, but you get the point.

Here’s a hint, just because it’s popular, like how Virtual Event Planning may be a popular niche right now, does not mean it’s for you. If you enjoy something, you are more likely to be good at it. Leverage what comes naturally to you.

There are opportunities in all of these buckets! You just have to choose what’s right for YOU!
