How Do You Feel About Money?

We’re going a little deep today.

In just two days, a bunch of Free Mamas and I are going to get vulnerable and honest and really lean into the work that is needed to run a successful business at Freelance to Freedom Weekend.

One of these topics happens to be one that just about everyone and their grandma has an opinion about — money.

Now, I know you probably at least appreciate money if for nothing else than its ability to pay for food and keep your lights on.

But what about your money mindset?

This isn’t about people who like to drive nice cars and wear expensive clothes versus the people who don’t. It goes much deeper than that.

Your money mindset is your own personal set of beliefs and values surrounding money. It usually stems from how you were raised, and drives your decisions regarding anything financial, whether you realize it or not.

In business, taking a good look at your money mindset is extremely important if you want to really grow into a successful freelancer.

We’re so conditioned with an employee mindset, where someone else decides how much we earn, how much we work, and how far up the ladder we can climb.

The transition into business owner can be haaaaard when you’re so used to NOT being in control of these things.

Gif by Giphy

Do any of these sound familiar? They’re just some of the money mindset beliefs that mamas have shared recently:

💰 Wanting to replace your income from your 9-5, but you can’t imagine charging clients “that much” for your services.

💰 Wanting to raise your rates, but then wondering “Who do I think I am?”

💰 Having a hard time setting firm boundaries around your clients paying their invoices on time, and feeling scared to jeopardize your relationships with them.

💰 Having the realization that you’re operating from a place of lack rather than abundance, and that it’s affecting every decision in your life and business.

💰 Making the decision to finally BELIEVE that you deserve to make the money and live the lifestyle you want because you’re willing to work hard for it.

These, and a million other reasons, are why checking your money mindset is SO VERY IMPORTANT.

I most definitely had to take a long, hard look at my own starting around the time I got into freelancing, and again when I created my course…and multiple times since. It’s something you have to keep coming back to as you grow and evolve.

Money may be one of the more controversial topics in our culture, but does it really have to be? Can we do the work to change our money mindset into something that will benefit us, rather than hold us hostage to beliefs that aren’t serving us?

Here’s a simple but powerful exercise you can do to start diving into your own money mindset:

Make a list of at least 10 “Money is…” statements that you believe. Take your time with it and be really honest with yourself. You may learn some eye-opening things about how you feel about money and what things you’re ready to change.

80: How to Make Time to Grow Your Business So You Can Work ON It and Not Just IN It

What’s important to you?

Not urgent… important. And think carefully, because if everything is a priority, then nothing is.

During this week’s podcast, I shared 3 tips for how you can hone in on your priorities (both in life and in your business) so that you can actually create the time for them.

Listen in because I will give you a huge tip as to how you can make time for your business and have it grow all in a weekend!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Making the time to allow growth in your business
  • Figuring out the things that are important in your business
  • How to end the overwhelm

Sometimes we serve so much in our businesses that we forget that we’re actually running a business.

And don’t get me wrong, service is amazing. I am always in the Facebook group, showing up and making sure you feel best served. But if you are working IN your business too much, you have no time to work ON your business, which could stifle its growth.

In order to get around this obstacle is to decide what is and actually focus on what is important. Service is important, yes, but what is not important is attending 50 different summits where you will have people talk at you for hours on end about their success, not actually giving you actionable ways to achieve your own.

Choose to spend time on things that will truly benefit you.

It’s also important to block out time to tackle the tasks that you may be putting off or that you may feel you have no time to do. If you schedule appointments for yourself and follow through with those appointments, you’ll be able to get a lot more done than you might expect.

Setting goals is key to achieving success, but it’s not about the HOW it’s about the WHY and the WHAT. If you focus on the “how”, you will get in your own way, thinking it’s impossible to start.

Make sure you get your ticket now for Freelance to Freedom Weekend so that you can start tackling these goals and start prioritizing your business.

79: 3 Things 6-Figure Free Mamas Have In Common (and 1 they don’t!)

Not sure if you knew this, but the Free Mamas are amazing!

There are quite a few of them who have achieved the 6-Figure award that we give out over here at The Free Mama. Reviewing the winners’ slideshow, I realized that these astounding women all had three things in common, and on this week’s episode of Free Mama Radio, I will share those three things along with the ONE thing they don’t have in common.

Make sure you stay until the end because I give you one easy way to do all three things in one weekend.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • How when we stand up for ourselves, good things happen
  • Different paths can all lead to success
  • The three things 6-figure Free Mamas have in common

As we all know, Freelance to Freedom Weekend had to be postponed to the first weekend of November. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate some of these amazing Free Mamas now.

I am so incredibly proud of what all of you have achieved, so when I tell you I am thrilled to share with you what these women have in common, I really mean it.

Before I get into that though, let me tell you what they don’t have in common: their paths.

All of these incredibly successful mamas have chosen different paths to get to where they are. But here’s the thing: they all are experts in their field and have made themselves indispensable.

And not only are they experts but they are experts in ONE THING. If you are too all over the board, no one will trust that you know the niche that you are claiming to know. Therefore, become so good at the thing that you do that people can’t think of someone else to do the job.

These women also invested money in themselves. In coaches, in networking, and their skills. One way you can do this is by signing up for our upcoming Freelance to Freedom Weekend, which is now November 5-6.

Make sure you get your ticket now so you too can make your way toward that 6-figure award.

You’re Already Doing This… Why Not Get Paid For It?

Be honest with me. Have you ever doubted your ability to be a virtual assistant because you don’t think you have any special skills?

Have you seen posts in the Free Mama Movement Facebook group and you had no earthly idea what they were talking about?

Then, you start thinking that all this VA stuff must be really complicated or advanced, and you’re just a mom/teacher/server/customer service rep/anything else…so it’s probably not for you.

Allow me to kindly, but firmly, tell you you’re wrong.

Sure, there are specialized and more complex services that many Free Mamas offer their clients. However, most of them DIDN’T start their freelancing business there. Many of them started with what they knew — something that you’re doing at this very second.

Email.

Gif by Giphy

Yes, email.

Did you know that tons of business owners STRUGGLE with managing their email? Furthermore, they’re ready and willing — RIGHT NOW, with money in hand — to outsource this task to someone.

📧 Can you check email? Clearly, you can.

📧 Can you reply to emails with basic etiquette and complete sentences? Most likely.

📧 Can you organize emails into folders, or do a search on Google or YouTube to show you how? I’m willing to bet so.

YAY! You can offer email management as a virtual assistant, AND you can start immediately. A computer, WiFi, and the above skills (which you already have) are all you need.

(It’s also helpful to actually LIKE email and be at least somewhat organized with your own. If you have 75,000 unread emails in your own inbox, managing a client’s email may not be up your alley…but still, you CAN do it).

Don’t make this harder or more complicated than it is. Stop telling yourself that you don’t have any skills because I just showed you that you do. Don’t worry about posts in the Facebook group that you don’t understand yet.

You don’t need to know everything before you start your freelancing business. You start first, then learn anything you want…all while making money and growing your skills and experience.

Get Paid On Time, Every Time

Do you enjoy getting paid for the work you do?

Gif by Giphy

I thought so.

So then, what happens if you’ve sent an invoice to your client, and…crickets? You provide a service in exchange for payment. It’s kind of the whole point of business.

Plenty of people are really uncomfortable talking about money.

But in business, there are times when it’s a must. One of those times is when you have a client who is late paying you. At best, it’s an annoyance…and sometimes it can be a major inconvenience or lead to financial struggle for you as a freelancer.

Let’s do everything we can to avoid that and get you paid on time, every time!

78: Your Business Should Be This

Business is such a stiff word.

What do you think of when you think of that word? Probably an office building and suits. Maybe some emails, spreadsheets, and contracts. Yes, it can be all these things, but it can also be FUN.

In today’s podcast, I talk about the pressure we put on ourselves and how we should be treating our businesses. It may not be what you think!

I hope you stick around as this episode is perhaps my most vulnerable and real to date.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • We should be having fun in our business
  • The pressure of being a high acheiver
  • Breaking down what will happen at Freelance to Freedom Weekend

I told my team this episode was going to be about having fun in your business. And it was…

More than anything the message that came across this week is that how we spend our days is how we spend our lives, and therefore these businesses that we create should be fun.

Easier said than done. And this is also coming from someone who broke down crying on the internet from putting too much pressure on herself. But guess what? I am human, and so are you and we need to allow ourselves some grace.

It’s all about setting realistic goals and expectations and remembering that although we may love our businesses, you and your business are two separate entities. And if you have awareness in your business (and in life), although it can be painful, it also leads to solutions and strength.
