68: We Can Do Hard Things

When you first started your online business you were excited by the possibilities and newness! It’s that honeymoon phase! Life is good!

Now that hard work has hit and you’re in execution mode, the doubts and impatience have the potential to get the best of you.

Or maybe, you just got back from vacation and you haven’t been eating well or moving your body *guilty* and it feels really hard to get back into solid routines and healthy habits that will serve you.

Or maybe, you’ve had kids home all summer and you are having trouble finding the motivation to kick your business into gear now that the back-to-school countdown is on.

Wherever you’re at right now, in this episode, you’ll get the reminder you may need right now that you can do hard things!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Getting back into a routine
  • Doing hard things to make necessary changes
  • How I overcame hard things this summer on my 6-week family RV trip

We all have goals of what we want for our business, our health and our relationships.  You can visualize how it’s going to go and then something gets in the way or shifts.  Now, things aren’t clear, you’re doing the work, but you can’t see the progress, and you’re feeling unsure of what’s going to happen.

What do you do?  Stick with it.

Let’s be honest, in our lives and business we experience amazing highs and not-so-fun lows. On our RV trip, we had some magical experiences, that gave me goosebumps and some lows where I just cried.  We have to experience these moments, celebrate the wins, get back up in the lows, and not beat ourselves up.

“You can do the hard things,” you know you can, the only way to the top of your goal is to do the work.  Hard things don’t go away, they shift and change, but you take the good with the bad and accept the diversities.

Listen, you’re not alone, you have support, guides, resources, and a map to follow, along with an amazing community that is here just for you!  So, keep doing the hard things, creating the good habits, and making those choices to grow.

Be sure to check out the links below, because no matter where you are in your journey, we have something for you. From free training and free YouTube videos to our Facebook group or even the Free Mama Squad, we have so much to help you get the support you need!

Choose a freelance niche you LOVE

Hey Mama!

Did you catch my interview with Craig Cannings from Freelance U? He brought the 🔥 and answered one of THE most common questions asked in the freelancing world:

What should I choose for my niche?

Pause. Rewind. ⏪

What’s a freelancing niche ??

Don’t worry if this word is new to you! In terms of freelancing, your niche simply means the specialized area you choose to focus on when providing a service. Truly, there are LOTS of different freelancing niches — a few examples are social media management, virtual assisting, graphic design, and copywriting.

Basically, this is the freelancing version is, “What do you want to do when you grow up?”

And honestly, it can be a little overwhelming at first, because there are a LOT of freelancing choices.

YIKES.

Especially when you’re new to this whole world of freelancing, it can feel overwhelming. I mean, how are you supposed to know what you’re going to like doing for a freelancing niche, when you’ve never done any of these things before?

Which is why Craig’s talk was so helpful. He walked us through:

•How to determine the niche that is tailor-made for you.

Seven profitable niches that clients are desperate to hire for right now.

•Ten types of clients who are actively looking for freelancers, AND where to find them.

•How to quickly learn the skills you need to succeed as a freelancer.

AND THEN, Craig opened the doors to Freelance University JUST FOR FREE MAMAS.

So, what’s Freelance University? I’m so glad you asked.

It’s like Netflix for freelancers — but way better, because you’re learning all kinds of skills that you can get paid for.

67: How To Choose A Niche Tailor Made For Your With Craig Cannings

Are you brand new to the world of freelancing, or just getting started in your new virtual business, but you not being able to choose a niche is causing hesitation?

Finding a niche can feel overwhelming for new freelancers, because you’ve likely never done some of these tasks before! I always like to say, “we don’t know what we don’t know.” But there is good news; you have natural strengths and transferrable skills that make you totally qualified to dive in.

So, how do you narrow down what you like or don’t like, when you’re unsure of what you want to do? In this episode, Craig Canning of Freelance University and I dive into how to figure out your niche, tools to use, and a special event, you don’t want to miss!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The Niche Identification Matrix
  • Matching your personality to your niche
  • Feeding the spark to find your passion
  • Matching your work skills to your niche
  • The importance of finding a profitable niche

Let me introduce my friend, Craig Cannings. He’s the co-founder of Freelance U with his wife, Kelly. Craig has helped over 20,000 students realize their dreams of launching a freelance business (and lifestyle). He enjoys the freedom of working from home, traveling abroad and raising 5 wonderful daughters. At Freelance U they specialize in training freelancers to master different types of niches.

Craig shares the 4 “P’s” to discover what you want to do. It’s called “The Niche Identification Matrix.” The matrix helps the students find their niche. 1.) Personality, align work with what you want to do 2.) Passion, look at options you are interested in. 3.) Proficiencies, know your capabilities or transferable skills. 4. ) Profitable Niches, a viable service, something needed.

In the Free Mama Community we talk about niching down and finding your specialty. So… ya’ll know I love to share opportunities and perspectives with you and for almost a year now, I have been planning something!

I am so so excited! Craig and I are offering a FREE Workshop, 7-Pathways Masterclass. This Event is Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30 a.m. CST on Zoom, , where we really dive into finding your niche, starting out, and growing relatively quickly in your business.

Are you valuing your work?

Who doesn’t love a good buzzword?

Pivot. Normalize. Self-care. Unprecedented.

I’m not saying any of these things are bad, Mama… just pointing out that they’re words we hear a lot of these days.

I’ve been around the online business space for about 7 years, which isn’t all that long, depending on what you compare it to. But even in that time, there have been so many of these words or phrases that have fallen in and out of style.

However, one that I’ll continue to stand by, no matter how overused it may feel, is value.

In fact, it’s such an important concept that I see it everywhere I go. It’s gotten to the point where I think in terms of value more often than not.

For example, my family and I (including a rambunctious puppy) are on an RV road trip as we speak. If you’ve ever taken a vacation, you know that costs can add up quickly, especially when you’re trying to keep the kids snacked up and happy.

So, on bathroom breaks between destinations, we’ll often pick up a couple things to eat and keep our energy (and moods) up.

Have you ever realized that a single banana at a convenience store usually costs as much as an entire pound of bananas at a regular grocery store?

Pre-value Lauren might have balked at this because, yes, it’s ridiculously overpriced in terms of dollars and cents. BUT, the value of the banana is what I’m focusing on.

1. It’s healthy.

2. It’ll give my husband a burst of much-needed energy as he drives our giant RV and attached Jeep across the Western half of the country.

3. It won’t create a mess of crumbs, greasy fingerprints, or lots of trash.

4. If for some reason he doesn’t want it, any other Golden would happily eat it.

So, to me, this 50 cent banana holds a lot of value.

Enter your next Free Mama Summer School lesson…

How much are you valuing the work you do for your clients? How much do you value what you can bring to the table when you’re speaking with a potential client?

Too often, we get tied up in the black-and-white dollar amounts of what we’re charging, and totally ignore how valuable it is for our clients.

Let’s say you’re starting out as a virtual assistant and are tasked with creating an email signature for your client in Canva. It might only take you 30 minutes, and if your hourly rate is $25, you’d charge $12.50 for this task.

Do you really think this is worth only $12.50…as in just two dozen convenience store bananas?

Think Value…

What if you thought more in terms of the value of that email signature?

First, your client COULD create it on his/her own by following some tutorials on YouTube or Google, or following a design template in Canva. But they’re not — they’re paying YOU to take this task off their hands.

You’re giving your client back their time by completing this task. That’s huge.

Second, what will this email signature do for your client’s business? Maybe it will help put their face with their name so their audience can like, know, and trust them more (which usually leads to more sales in the long run).

Third, it’s always important to take into consideration things like taxes, your time and expertise (yes, even if you’re a beginner).

I don’t normally drop a bunch of links in emails, but I understand how much of a hot topic pricing is, so here are three episodes of Free Mama TV to help you determine how much to charge for your services.

So, Mama, the next time you’re sending off a proposal or telling a prospective client your rates, remember that the value of what you’re doing is way more important than simply the time it takes you.

And if nothing else, just think about how many more convenience store bananas you could get once you set your rates based on the value you bring. 🍌

P.S. If you’re struggling with figuring out what to charge for your freelance services, remember that pricing based on value is key! Check out these past Free Mama TV episodes to help you 1. Charge what you’re worth, 2. Structure your pricing, and 3. Price based on packages.

The possibilities are nearly endless

Hey Mama, you know that the Free Mama community is almost entirely pink.

However, we do have a handful of amazing Free Papas whom we welcome with open arms, and we’re about to have another honorary one join us next week!

I’m not talking about some man on Facebook who is joining our group and hanging out in the background. But how awkward and creepy would that be if I wrote an entire email introducing each new guy who joined our group? 😂

No, this man is someone I trust who teaches people how to start their own freelancing businesses from home.

via Big Brother After Dark on Giphy

Yep, I’m bringing someone into our group for a special FREE training on how to build your skills and have a thriving freelancing business! (Sound familiar?)

Who is this mystery man?!

Our special guest is my friend Craig Cannings, and he and his wife have been freelancing for over 20 years, and teaching others how to do the same since 2008 with Freelance University.

Like me, Craig knows that freelancing is one of the best ways for people to make money from home and have a lucrative, sustainable business — without the constraints of the 9-5.

I’m thrilled to share my interview with him with you next week AND bring him live into our Facebook group for more training.

But Lauren, isn’t he one of your competitors?

Technically, yes. And I’m totally okay with that.

It’s just a fact that different people, timing, and opportunities will resonate differently with people.

I want YOU, Mama, to be able to choose the path that’s best for you in starting your business. You might feel more aligned with Freelance U than with my program, and I want you to rest easy knowing I’ll only bring people into our community who I trust completely.

But I’ll tell you straight up, a while back I had sort of a similar moment when I DID feel negatively about people choosing a different program than mine. I share about it in this video, and I think there are some good lessons to be learned for you, too.

As we wrap up Free Mama Summer School, I hope you’ll tune in this Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30am CST (11:30am ET, 9:30am MT, 8:30am PT) for my interview with Craig. You’ll learn more about freelancing, specifically about how to find the perfect niche for you — from someone other than me!

Craig and I will see you Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30am CST!

P.S. Maybe The Free Mama Movement isn’t the best fit for you when it comes to starting your freelancing business. Join me with Craig Cannings of Freelance U on Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30am CST to learn all about which freelancing niche is right for you.

66: The Horrible Marketing Advice You’re Getting Online (And What to Do Instead)

The online buzz for growing your business is to offer freebies, build your email lists, and you’ll get more clients, right?!

Wrong! This is just not true, especially if you’re brand new to freelancing or even looking to sustain a healthy 1:1 service provider business online. In fact, this approach is actually one of the worst you can follow!

In this episode, I’ll tell you why this is so wrong for your business. Plus, I’ll walk you through the exact steps you need to take to grow your online business profitably, and without burning out or wasting time!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Why freebies shouldn’t be the first thing you build (and when you should take the time to do them)
  • The Three Must do’s to Grow
  • Steps to level up for more money, more quickly

You’ve heard, “build your email list, offer freebies, and grow your clients.” This just doesn’t work when your new or starting to build your business, Why? Because you spend a lot of time, money, and energy doing this and make no money! Now, you’re burnt out and frustrated.

I have said this before and I will say it again. Three things you Must do to grow your business. 1.) One on One service provider. 2.) Have conversations in person and online, network, and get referrals. 3.) Make some revenue! You gotta put yourself out there! Check out Free Mama TV, search “clients” there are several videos on these three topics.

Let’s say, you have regular clients and you’re ready to level up. This the time for an email list and freebies, Right? NO! Create something that makes you money! Start with your core offer, build a funnel around it, create an opt-in, and then do a trip wire funnel.

You gotta walk before you can run, you need to bring in revenue. Listen, use the support and guidance available in the Free Mama Programs and the Facebook Group! Create success for your business not burn out for you.

Be sure to check out the links below, because no matter where you are in your journey, we have something for you. From free training and free YouTube videos to our Facebook group or even the Free Mama Squad, we have so much to help you get the support you need!

Feel Confident About Taxes As A New Business Owner

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 1-3.png

Are you telling yourself this lie?

Mama, have you ever believed any lies about yourself?

You’re human, so you probably have. 😉

Here are some I hear a lot:

I’m not smart enough.
I’m just a mom.
Running a business is for people more ___than me.
Why would anyone pay me to do something for them?

And those are just the ones I thought of in 5 seconds. I could list many, many more after working with thousands of women over the past 3+ years.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we let these thoughts into our heads and set up camp there?

The answer to this question could go REALLY deep, but I challenge you to think about why you believe any of these things about yourself.

Did someone tell you that at some point in your past? Did you have an epic failure at something that scarred you from trying again? Do you see other people around you who are successful, and assume they must have it all together?

Yes, this lesson of Free Mama Summer School isn’t a skills-focused one. The actual tasks you’ll do as a freelancer can be relatively easy — especially with the right resources — but the mindset work is what will take you from where you are now to the next level, and way beyond.

Making the mistake of ignoring the mindset aspect of running your business because you assume it’s fluff people talk about to sell books, is nearly guaranteed to keep you from having the success you want.

It’s work that you should never stop doing or prioritizing, and I assure you that ANY successful entrepreneur will tell you the same.

My question?

That’s why I wanted to share this video with you from February 2019 when I posed the question: what are you saying about yourself when you say that everyone else has it all together?

Starting a business is the greatest personal development course you’ll ever take. And if you want to start doing the mindset work, might I suggest that you check out the Free Mamas Unite recordings, which you can currently get for just $27?

People let you see what they want you to see…and many people (myself included!) are going to put their best foot forward most of the time. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong because all you can see at the moment is the syrupy pancake your kids crushed into the carpet and the fact that you haven’t been able to grab a shower in a couple of days. 😩

It’s way too easy to get caught up in the comparison game and react emotionally to things.

What if, instead of replaying all the lies that tell you you CAN’T have a successful business, you turned them around to…

Firstly, I am able to have a fulfilling freelancing business.
Secondly, I am able to learn new skills.
Thirdly, I am able to invest in myself.
Finally, I am able to go after what I want.

65: What You Really Need To Get Hired And Be A Success

Do you stress about being qualified enough to be successful? Does the idea of hopping on a discovery call with a potential client make you want to throw up a little bit?

You’ve heard freelancing is amazing, but you don’t have any fancy certifications or degrees, so you’re questioning your abilities and imposter syndrome is creeping in big time.

In this episode, I’m sharing what you really need to get hired and be a success in your business. What I share may surprise you!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Why education doesn’t equal entrepreneurial success
  • The qualities you actually need to be successful in business
  • What your prospective clients are looking for when they hire

You may have heard we are hiring at Free Mama, and it’s exciting and scary, to be honest. It made me really ask what do we want. We need experience, but it’s really important, the person aligns with our values, our mission, and fits in with the team.

If someone said to you “think of a person with success,” most would think of educated, smart, and experienced people. Yet, successful people are proactive, resourceful, intentional and push past their limiting beliefs. They don’t always have big formal education credentials.

Entrepreneurs want people that share their vision, understand their needs, and who takes intuitive. We gotta stop with the “I’m not qualified or experienced enough. ” We have to value ourselves, our skills, and what we have to offer. That’s what makes us hirable.

Remember, “Everybody starts at ground zero!” Just Start!

Community over competition — not just a catchphrase

As we wrap up Free Mama Summer School, I want to make sure you feel equipped with the information you need to continue building your freelancing business — both in the skills you’re learning AND in your mindset.

Of course, there’s plenty I could teach you (and I will, don’t worry!), but I’m also enlisting the help of a friend!

(He’s so lucky this is a virtual thing because your girl is a hugger).

First things first, though…

APPETIZER

Start with something new and exciting!

Like always, I was live this Monday in the Facebook group and chatting about choosing a niche that is truly tailored to you. Did you catch it live? I shared how finding your niche can be overwhelming as a new freelancer or someone just starting out.  The good news is, you can find your niche without giving up the things you’re naturally good at and what you enjoy doing. Check it out, It’s definitely worth a listen — head over to Free Mama Radio and hear for yourself.

MAIN DISH

Chef’s Special

As cool as it would have been, I wasn’t the person who invented freelancing. And I’m most definitely NOT the only person on the Internet who teaches others how to start their own freelancing business.

At The Free Mama, we all believe in community over competition — which is why next week, I’m introducing you to my friend Craig Cannings, who is the co-founder of Freelance University. Craig is a super smart guy who knows that freelancing is a fantastic way to earn consistent money from home, and that there’s no better time than now to start your business!

On August 3rd at 10:30 a.m. CST, Craig and I will be chatting and you can find out if Freelance University is right for you.

And for your final Free Mama Summer School lesson, check out how I discovered that I’m not for everyone, and that it’s okay.

I’m cool with the fact that my program isn’t the right fit for everyone (hence, why Craig is coming into our group next week!), and it took some internal work for me to get there.

Understanding and accepting this truth about yourself as well is a big mindset shift that will benefit your freelancing business and set you apart!

DESSERT

Something Sweet

Doing scary things is hard AND amazing. It’s been so awesome to watch Melissa Bucci-Setzer level up her business!

Don’t forget to post in the Facebook group to share your wins, offer encouragement to other mamas, and get your questions answered!

P.S.  Sometimes seeing what business owners are looking for helps you narrow down what aligns with your  interests.  Check out the Ninety skills Business Owners need right now to help you find your niche.

64: What’s Right vs. What’s Right For You

You found “what’s right” for your business, but is it “right for you?” There are so many business models, marketing strategies, and gurus out there, how do you know what’s going to be in alignment with what you want and actually work?

In this episode, we jump into three ways to find out if something is not only “right” but “right for you” in your business.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The difference between right and right for you
  • How to figure out your strengths
  • Why fear isn’t a reason not to do something (and what is!)
  • Why most business owners give up too soon

Take a minute and figure out what your strengths are, write them down. Be self-aware of what you enjoy doing. One of my strengths is talking. I love to talk – and even had hints that I was really good at it in my elementary school days! I learned to utilize this strength in my business.

Are you making excuses out of fear or do you really prefer not to do the thing. If it is fear, you will work through that fear and do it. But, if it’s truly a preference not to do something then re-evaluate and find what you prefer to do. Find something that resonates with you.

Finally, “Give it long enough to work for you”. You gotta get over yourself and keep going, commit to the time it takes. Listen, you will have hard times, you will still have fears, but if it’s in alignment with you and your life, it definitely will pay off when you give it time!
