30: Creating Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in Our Communities with Charmin Rickards and LaDonna Sanders Redmond

Today’s episode of Free Mama Radio was previously recorded during the Diversity in Business panel at Free Mama Live. It was too good to keep private, so we’re sharing it here today.

Of course, diversity goes well beyond business, but to keep it in alignment with our responsibility as business owners, mothers, and humans, we knew that this was a conversation that needed to be included in our community.

I sat down with two professionally trained inclusion and diversity experts, and you’re going to hear all about their background and how they got into this line of work, as well as some really hard and uncomfortable but oh so important questions and topics.

Charmin Rickards is a retired Lieutenant Commander who served over 22 years in the United States Navy. Before she retired, she served as Deputy Diversity Officer, which launched her career in diversity and inclusion. Today she works in affirmative employment program management for the federal government.

LaDonna Sanders Redmond is a food justice activist. She started working in the world of food justice because her son developed food allergies at a very early age. She helps build fair food systems and food access for communities.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • What diversity and inclusion means
  • The difference between diversity, inclusion, and equality
  • Having self awareness
  • Improving communication to be able to talk through differences
  • Why learning is a lifelong process
  • Practicing talking through conflict
  • The importance of noticing the diversity that is already around you
  • How to see around your bias
  • How having a prosperity mindset can help you to be inclusive

It starts with us, folks. We have to better ourselves before we can better the world around us.

I hope you enjoyed listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed hosting it, and that you have some ideas about what you can do to make your business a more inclusive space.
