17: Getting What You Want From Life with Boss Mom Dana Malstaff

Boss Mom Dana Malstaff

When is the last time you thought about what it is you REALLY want from life?

Today we’re learning from the original Boss Mom herself, Dana Malstaff.  She’s sharing with us her filter on how she makes decisions and the same technique she teaches to all of her coaching students. Plus, you are going to hear me give Dana my very own secret confession.

Dana Malstaff is the CEO and Founder of Boss Mom. She launched the Boss Mom brand with her first book Boss Mom: The Ultimate Guide to Raising a Business & Nurturing Your Family Like a Pro in 2015 and that started an international movement. The Boss Mom’s Facebook community has organically grown to over 50,000 members and there are now Boss Mom local meetups in over 80 cities. Dana believes that we need to show our children that doing what we love can be financially viable– and you know I love this too!

We’re diving into all kinds of things that can hold you back from getting what you really want from life, including saying yes to too much, comparing yourself to others, and the fear of failure.  I have experienced all of these myself and I want to help you avoid making the same mistakes I did!  Dana shares SO much great advice in this episode, this is going to be one you won’t want to miss!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The value of outsourcing
  • Why women say yes too much
  • The mission of the Boss Mom
  • What your business and your kids have in common
  • Creating familiarity for your brand
  • Effective market research
  • Dana’s goal to talk to 3 different types of people- and WHY!
  • How valuable books can be to learning and developing
  • Being a student of other people’s success
  • The biggest things that hold people back from being successful
  • The comparison trap and how to stop it

16: Just Jump In! The Key to Getting Started as a Freelancer

Are you ready to dive in at the deep end and start swimming like a pro?

Don’t worry; I don’t mean literally. In this episode, I’m sharing why I think swimming is the perfect analogy for freelancing.

The question that I get asked the most is “how do I get started as a freelancer?”. . . Do you want to know the honest answer? You just have to go for it! No matter how long you spend walking around the pool (setting up your business), you will not be a swimmer (freelancer) until you jump on in! It requires action. So today, we’re going to tackle how you can overcome that hurdle and actually get started as a freelancer. Not just someone who talks about being one.

If you’re someone who’s scared to dip their toes in the pool, this one’s for you.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The one question I get asked the most
  • How freelancing is similar to swimming
  • The main mistake I see Free Mamas making when they’re starting out
  • Why you should stop walking the parameter of the pool and just jump in
  • All the resources available to get started as a freelancer TODAY
  • The Free Mamas support system that won’t let you drown
  • Why you have to say you’re a swimmer before you feel like you are one

Did you follow my analogy here? What I want you to take away from this episode is that you have to take action. So jump in the pool and start swimming. You have to start doing the work. I know you can! You’ve got this mama!

If you liked this episode, I would love for you to take a screenshot wherever you’re listening and share it with me over on Instagram @laurengoldenfreemama. Tell me what you do, what your stroke is, who your ideal client is, and what services you provide. I’d love to know, and we will share in our stories and give you a shout out!

15: Why Sales Is Not a Dirty Word with Ryann Dowdy

What if I told you that success is so much closer than you think it is? Would you believe me?

Well, I’m not the only one who feels that way, and today I have my friend and sales coach extraordinaire Ryann Dowdy here to tell you why. If you have any money mindset issues or you believe sales is a dirty word, then listen in because she’s going to give you her best tips on how to go from not making any money to running a profitable business.

Ryann Dowdy is a sales coach who helps brand new entrepreneurs build six-figure businesses by mastering their sales conversations and their mindsets. After a fifteen-year corporate career, Ryann found a huge gap in the online coaching industry on teaching sales to women in business.

Together, we’re going to unpack why we get so uncomfortable talking about sales and how to overcome our fears. From mindset changes to practical tips, today’s show will have you covered.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Finding a gap in the market
  • Why people think of sales as a dirty word
  • What sales really comes down to
  • Mindset issues that Ryann has faced along the way
  • Overcoming limiting beliefs
  • Starting a family and running a business
  • Why sales is never about you
  • The value of simply talking to people
  • Giving people the space to say no

Ryann is speaking so much truth in this episode, I just love it. It’s so important to remember that no matter how many failures you have, you’ve never truly failed until you give up. If you refuse to give up, you are on the road to success. And that success is so much closer than you think mama!

Freelancing

Are you wondering how you can start freelancing while working a full-time job? Do you still think of yourself as an employee instead of as a boss? Could your limiting mindset be what’s holding you back?

This is part two of a two-episode series, so if you haven’t listened to last week’s episode, you’re gonna want to go check that out before you dive into this one. Last week we covered the logistics of transitioning from employee to business owner, and today we’re covering mindset.

We’re talking about the mindset shifts that have to take place if you’re going to become a successful freelancer or business owner. Spoiler alert: they’re not the same mindsets we’ve been conditioned to believe since we were little!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The difference between finding a remote job and becoming a business owner
  • Why freelancing requires you to show up differently than you might be used to
  • How to look for clients rather than look for jobs
  • What a discovery call is and how it’s similar to a job interview
  • How to take control of a discovery call
  • Having a boss mindset vs an employee mindset
  • The importance of showing up and providing an outstanding service

Be sure to tune in to this two-part series. This transition is something that I see a lot of free mamas struggling with inside our Facebook group, and most of the time they don’t even realize it! Get comfortable challenging your mindset. When you do, you’ll open yourself up to a world of opportunities and a life that YOU are in control of.

how to start freelancing

Are you trying to start a freelancing business while still juggling a full-time job? This is something that a lot of my free mamas are trying to navigate, and I did too!

I am here with a two part episode to unpack the logistics and the mindset changes you need to focus on in order to transition from being an employee to a business owner. It is a change that brings unique challenges. You have to be prepared to really work for what you want, because it might mean getting up a little earlier, or working on the weekends, or giving up some of those Netflix binges. But hard work pays off mama.

Today we’re covering some of the logistics of freelancing and working a full-time job that people don’t always tell you about. I want to make sure you’re covering all your bases!

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Why you have to really love what you’re doing
  • What to consider when transitioning from employee to business owner
  • The importance of understanding your company’s H.R. policy on having a side gig
  • Tips for talking to your boss about starting a side gig
  • The importance of continuing to be present at your current job
  • How to turn your previous employer into your highest paying client
  • The value of networking online
  • How to build an online presence and start putting yourself out there

Let me remind you that you should not and do not have to do this all by yourself. Isn’t life hard enough? You need a family of free mamas to support, uplift and surround you. If you are wondering if freelancing is right for you, I would love for you to join our amazing online community over on Facebook >> Free Mama Movement Community

Have you ever felt not good enough? Worthless even? What if I told you it didn’t have to be that way?

My good friend Bonnie Kelly is here to tell you how to stop self-sabotaging so you can reach your full potential and live a joy-filled life

Speaker, author, and coach, Bonnie Kelly, is the founder of Rebels for Joy, a movement on a mission to help women radically transform the way they think and feel. Through her dynamic teachings, she has equipped thousands of women with the necessary tools to realign their purpose, passion and power, all fueled by authentic joy.

There is no one more qualified to talk to us about overcoming self-sabotage and fear. Bonnie spends her life helping women do just that. Today she’s getting raw and real, as she shares some of the traumas of her past that have led her to where she is today. Whether you’ve experienced trauma like Bonnie, or maybe you just had too much pressure on you growing up, those past experiences create emotional baggage that affects who you are today.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Overcoming trauma
  • Breaking down your walls and getting vulnerable
  • What it means to be a rebel for joy
  • Why being a mom doesn’t mean you have to play it small
  • The importance of building trust with yourself

8: It’s Time to Do Better: Being More Intentional in the Fight Against Racism

Today’s episode is a little different but more important than ever. Following the death of George Floyd and the discussion around racism that it has sparked globally, I feel a responsibility to speak up and share how we will be making positive changes at The Free Mama.

Join me as we face these difficult but necessary conversations head-on, and take time to reflect on what we can do as individuals and as a community to make sure that our actions have a lasting impact.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The power of your influence
  • Why now is the time to start learning, educating, and elevating the voices that need to be heard
  • Your influence as a mother
  • What we’re doing at The Free Mama to make a difference
  • Questions to consider as we work to better ourselves

I believe in the Free Mama Movement. In the idea that we can change the world because we’re moms. We are raising the next generation, so let’s raise them to be better than us.

If you want to join the discussion taking place in the Free Mama Facebook group, I ask that you be respectful and productive with your comments.

I think we can all agree that we need to commit to MASSIVE ACTION.

So what does this look like?

1. Join me in donating funds and signing petitions that support black people AKA put your “money and your pen” where your mouth is.
2. You can talk to your children and put in the time to educate yourself on your unconscious biases.
3. You can follow more black influencers (like herher or him) and listen.
4. Check on your black friends and make sure they’re okay.
5. Vote.

At the Free Mama, we are also evaluating our long term strategies to affect change, which means asking some hard questions…

Do black women feel represented in our community and at our events?
How diverse are my team, colleagues and coaches?
Will we collaborate with other businesses, events, podcasts and summits who do not uphold our commitment to diversity?
How can we bring the mission of the Free Mama to marginalized mothers?
How can we share the struggles and successes of more black women in our community?

I will use the Free Mama platform to do better, demonstrate to the best of my ability what that looks like, share stories of more women of color in our community whose experiences I cannot understand.

Black lives matter at the Free Mama. Please know that I will always fight to keep this community safe and inclusive and productive.

We are the human race. Black lives matter. I am with you.
