Work-Life Balance (IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE?!)

Have you ever worked in a corporate setting and sat through one of those uninspiring “work-life balance” presentations? I’m sorry, but…

Help Wanted…

FOR YOU

When you drive around your city, how many “Now Hiring” signs do you see? How often do you hear of places being too short-staffed to operate?

When my family and I RV’d across the western half of the country this summer, EVERYWHERE we stopped had a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. Coffee shops, restaurants, stores, gas stations — EVERYWHERE. Pick a place, and there was a cry for help — for new employees.

There are more job openings than willing workers these days.

Yes, people are in a hard place with their motivation to move forward and figure out what their post-pandemic life will be like.

I get it, firsthand. I had to reevaluate a lot of things in my personal AND business life to make sure I was still acting in alignment with my core values. My values hadn’t changed, but pretty much everything around me had.

It took a toll on my motivation, when I’m normally the exact opposite.

Are you in a similar boat? You know things need to shift, but you’re struggling with motivation AND you’re ready and willing to start taking productive steps again.

Here’s some great news — there has long been an abundance of opportunities for freelancers.

Now more than ever, business owners DESPERATELY NEED someone trustworthy and diligent to come into their businesses and take tasks off their plates. They’re experiencing a shortage of help, just like the restaurant down the street is.

So, where to start?

1️⃣ First thing first. It’s time to set good habits and make them non-negotiable.

And mama, you already have non-negotiable habits, like taking care of your family because you care about them and have a responsibility to them — even when it’s hard.

Could you devote that same level of significance when it comes to your goals for having your own business, like not having to go back to your job and living the lifestyle you want?

Some people call this your why, but I think it’s better described as getting rooted in whatever it is that makes you really care. What is SO IMPORTANT to you that you can commit to yourself to keep going, even on bad days?

2️⃣ Flip the script.

We tend to think way too big when it comes to changing habits or getting motivated, and then when we waver, we beat ourselves up and take two steps backward.

You can flip the script by adding one good thing to your routine rather than trying to withhold something from yourself.

For example, instead of worrying about taking away an hour of Netflix and scrolling social media, view it as adding 15 minutes here and there of networking online, going for a walk, or asking for help.

3️⃣ Don’t white-blouse it.

I haven’t trademarked this phrase yet, but I may have to. If you start with the thing you HAVE TO HAVE, it’ll feel impossible to find it.

You need clients if you want to have a successful freelancing business, but if you go out hunting for them, you’ll probably find it more difficult than it really is.

Instead of trying to figure out what services you want to offer and get everything perfect first, and THEN trying to find clients who fit that mold…

…FIRST find the need by observing how potential clients are describing their problems and what they’re asking for help with, AND THEN be the solution to those issues.

This method will almost always get clients in the door faster than what most people do when they white-blouse it.

Not everyone will continue to stay down. It might be hard, but you have this chance to get back up, start fresh, and create opportunities for yourself.

I always have your back…do you have yours?

Freelancing While Working Full-Time

Are you one of the many mamas who’s building your freelancing business while still holding down a 9-5?

It’s not easy, is it? I remember all too well how I felt when I was in that spot. And you better believe I made my fair share of mistakes while balancing two careers and a family.

Us moms have a lot to manage — taking care of ourselves, our family, and building our freelancing businesses so we can live a totally awesome, guilt-free life.

Many Free Mamas start their businesses while still working their traditional 9-5 job. This adds another layer of responsibility to the mix, but it’s nothing we can’t handle when done carefully and mindfully.

In this week’s episode of Free Mama TV, I break down four super important things to do when you’re both a freelancer AND a full-time employee.

What do you want?

Hi Mama!

We all have our reasons for wanting to have our own business.

Some of the most common I hear are:

▪️ Being home with our kids

▪️ Walking away from the 9-5

▪️ Freedom Financially

▪️ Wardrobe freedom (as in, no more stiff dress pants and painful shoes)

…and many others.

When I first got into freelancing in 2014ish, I was desperate to work from home because I thought it would give me the freedom to be the mom I wanted to be.

At the time, I was definitely NOT living up to my own expectations on how I’d mother my kids (or being the type of wife I wanted to be, either).

My business started out of a deep desire to be more present with my family AND contribute financially. Honestly, I also happen to LOVE working, so I wanted it ALL.

For our family, quitting my job and working from home didn’t look like having the kids at home with me 24/7. Instead, we shifted from full-time childcare to part-time preschool programs. For me, I know I can show up as my best self when I have dedicated time alone to work and practice self-care.

Set expectations

Setting that expectation and boundary from the beginning made all the difference. It allowed me to do my freelance work that I loved, bring in the second income we needed, AND do things I NEVER thought I’d be able to do, like…

🐒 Take the kids to children’s museums, the park, or the zoo in the middle of the week and let the rest of the population of Kansas City and Houston have them on the weekends.

🧺 Do laundry, dishes, and some very, very occasional dusting in pre-blocked times of the day.

🌮 Make dinner without being rushed along by hangry kids or husbands.

These things, these little things, meant everything to me. They were life-changing.

Big disclaimer: it never went perfectly smoothly. It still doesn’t. Life is still life, which means there are struggles sometimes.

When the dream becomes more…

What started as a dream to work from home and be with my family more turned into something much deeper and even more fulfilling. I was doing something FOR ME, which trickled down to my family and allowed us to work toward the life we wanted.

What does that look like for you, Mama?

It might not even be about working from home anymore since bajillions of people are doing that now through their companies.

I have to ask — is being a remote employee giving you what you want? Is it fulfilling the reasons you had for wanting to work from home in the first place? Have you revisited those reasons lately?

Mama, in case no one has ever told you, it’s ok to give yourself permission to do something for you. I’m cheering you on no matter what.

And if starting your own virtual business is what you want, you know where to find me.

Choose a freelance niche you LOVE

Hey Mama!

Did you catch my interview with Craig Cannings from Freelance U? He brought the 🔥 and answered one of THE most common questions asked in the freelancing world:

What should I choose for my niche?

Pause. Rewind. ⏪

What’s a freelancing niche ??

Don’t worry if this word is new to you! In terms of freelancing, your niche simply means the specialized area you choose to focus on when providing a service. Truly, there are LOTS of different freelancing niches — a few examples are social media management, virtual assisting, graphic design, and copywriting.

Basically, this is the freelancing version is, “What do you want to do when you grow up?”

And honestly, it can be a little overwhelming at first, because there are a LOT of freelancing choices.

YIKES.

Especially when you’re new to this whole world of freelancing, it can feel overwhelming. I mean, how are you supposed to know what you’re going to like doing for a freelancing niche, when you’ve never done any of these things before?

Which is why Craig’s talk was so helpful. He walked us through:

•How to determine the niche that is tailor-made for you.

Seven profitable niches that clients are desperate to hire for right now.

•Ten types of clients who are actively looking for freelancers, AND where to find them.

•How to quickly learn the skills you need to succeed as a freelancer.

AND THEN, Craig opened the doors to Freelance University JUST FOR FREE MAMAS.

So, what’s Freelance University? I’m so glad you asked.

It’s like Netflix for freelancers — but way better, because you’re learning all kinds of skills that you can get paid for.

Are you valuing your work?

Who doesn’t love a good buzzword?

Pivot. Normalize. Self-care. Unprecedented.

I’m not saying any of these things are bad, Mama… just pointing out that they’re words we hear a lot of these days.

I’ve been around the online business space for about 7 years, which isn’t all that long, depending on what you compare it to. But even in that time, there have been so many of these words or phrases that have fallen in and out of style.

However, one that I’ll continue to stand by, no matter how overused it may feel, is value.

In fact, it’s such an important concept that I see it everywhere I go. It’s gotten to the point where I think in terms of value more often than not.

For example, my family and I (including a rambunctious puppy) are on an RV road trip as we speak. If you’ve ever taken a vacation, you know that costs can add up quickly, especially when you’re trying to keep the kids snacked up and happy.

So, on bathroom breaks between destinations, we’ll often pick up a couple things to eat and keep our energy (and moods) up.

Have you ever realized that a single banana at a convenience store usually costs as much as an entire pound of bananas at a regular grocery store?

Pre-value Lauren might have balked at this because, yes, it’s ridiculously overpriced in terms of dollars and cents. BUT, the value of the banana is what I’m focusing on.

1. It’s healthy.

2. It’ll give my husband a burst of much-needed energy as he drives our giant RV and attached Jeep across the Western half of the country.

3. It won’t create a mess of crumbs, greasy fingerprints, or lots of trash.

4. If for some reason he doesn’t want it, any other Golden would happily eat it.

So, to me, this 50 cent banana holds a lot of value.

Enter your next Free Mama Summer School lesson…

How much are you valuing the work you do for your clients? How much do you value what you can bring to the table when you’re speaking with a potential client?

Too often, we get tied up in the black-and-white dollar amounts of what we’re charging, and totally ignore how valuable it is for our clients.

Let’s say you’re starting out as a virtual assistant and are tasked with creating an email signature for your client in Canva. It might only take you 30 minutes, and if your hourly rate is $25, you’d charge $12.50 for this task.

Do you really think this is worth only $12.50…as in just two dozen convenience store bananas?

Think Value…

What if you thought more in terms of the value of that email signature?

First, your client COULD create it on his/her own by following some tutorials on YouTube or Google, or following a design template in Canva. But they’re not — they’re paying YOU to take this task off their hands.

You’re giving your client back their time by completing this task. That’s huge.

Second, what will this email signature do for your client’s business? Maybe it will help put their face with their name so their audience can like, know, and trust them more (which usually leads to more sales in the long run).

Third, it’s always important to take into consideration things like taxes, your time and expertise (yes, even if you’re a beginner).

I don’t normally drop a bunch of links in emails, but I understand how much of a hot topic pricing is, so here are three episodes of Free Mama TV to help you determine how much to charge for your services.

So, Mama, the next time you’re sending off a proposal or telling a prospective client your rates, remember that the value of what you’re doing is way more important than simply the time it takes you.

And if nothing else, just think about how many more convenience store bananas you could get once you set your rates based on the value you bring. 🍌

P.S. If you’re struggling with figuring out what to charge for your freelance services, remember that pricing based on value is key! Check out these past Free Mama TV episodes to help you 1. Charge what you’re worth, 2. Structure your pricing, and 3. Price based on packages.

The possibilities are nearly endless

Hey Mama, you know that the Free Mama community is almost entirely pink.

However, we do have a handful of amazing Free Papas whom we welcome with open arms, and we’re about to have another honorary one join us next week!

I’m not talking about some man on Facebook who is joining our group and hanging out in the background. But how awkward and creepy would that be if I wrote an entire email introducing each new guy who joined our group? 😂

No, this man is someone I trust who teaches people how to start their own freelancing businesses from home.

via Big Brother After Dark on Giphy

Yep, I’m bringing someone into our group for a special FREE training on how to build your skills and have a thriving freelancing business! (Sound familiar?)

Who is this mystery man?!

Our special guest is my friend Craig Cannings, and he and his wife have been freelancing for over 20 years, and teaching others how to do the same since 2008 with Freelance University.

Like me, Craig knows that freelancing is one of the best ways for people to make money from home and have a lucrative, sustainable business — without the constraints of the 9-5.

I’m thrilled to share my interview with him with you next week AND bring him live into our Facebook group for more training.

But Lauren, isn’t he one of your competitors?

Technically, yes. And I’m totally okay with that.

It’s just a fact that different people, timing, and opportunities will resonate differently with people.

I want YOU, Mama, to be able to choose the path that’s best for you in starting your business. You might feel more aligned with Freelance U than with my program, and I want you to rest easy knowing I’ll only bring people into our community who I trust completely.

But I’ll tell you straight up, a while back I had sort of a similar moment when I DID feel negatively about people choosing a different program than mine. I share about it in this video, and I think there are some good lessons to be learned for you, too.

As we wrap up Free Mama Summer School, I hope you’ll tune in this Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30am CST (11:30am ET, 9:30am MT, 8:30am PT) for my interview with Craig. You’ll learn more about freelancing, specifically about how to find the perfect niche for you — from someone other than me!

Craig and I will see you Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30am CST!

P.S. Maybe The Free Mama Movement isn’t the best fit for you when it comes to starting your freelancing business. Join me with Craig Cannings of Freelance U on Tuesday, August 3rd at 10:30am CST to learn all about which freelancing niche is right for you.

Are you telling yourself this lie?

Mama, have you ever believed any lies about yourself?

You’re human, so you probably have. 😉

Here are some I hear a lot:

I’m not smart enough.
I’m just a mom.
Running a business is for people more ___than me.
Why would anyone pay me to do something for them?

And those are just the ones I thought of in 5 seconds. I could list many, many more after working with thousands of women over the past 3+ years.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we let these thoughts into our heads and set up camp there?

The answer to this question could go REALLY deep, but I challenge you to think about why you believe any of these things about yourself.

Did someone tell you that at some point in your past? Did you have an epic failure at something that scarred you from trying again? Do you see other people around you who are successful, and assume they must have it all together?

Yes, this lesson of Free Mama Summer School isn’t a skills-focused one. The actual tasks you’ll do as a freelancer can be relatively easy — especially with the right resources — but the mindset work is what will take you from where you are now to the next level, and way beyond.

Making the mistake of ignoring the mindset aspect of running your business because you assume it’s fluff people talk about to sell books, is nearly guaranteed to keep you from having the success you want.

It’s work that you should never stop doing or prioritizing, and I assure you that ANY successful entrepreneur will tell you the same.

My question?

That’s why I wanted to share this video with you from February 2019 when I posed the question: what are you saying about yourself when you say that everyone else has it all together?

Starting a business is the greatest personal development course you’ll ever take. And if you want to start doing the mindset work, might I suggest that you check out the Free Mamas Unite recordings, which you can currently get for just $27?

People let you see what they want you to see…and many people (myself included!) are going to put their best foot forward most of the time. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong because all you can see at the moment is the syrupy pancake your kids crushed into the carpet and the fact that you haven’t been able to grab a shower in a couple of days. 😩

It’s way too easy to get caught up in the comparison game and react emotionally to things.

What if, instead of replaying all the lies that tell you you CAN’T have a successful business, you turned them around to…

Firstly, I am able to have a fulfilling freelancing business.
Secondly, I am able to learn new skills.
Thirdly, I am able to invest in myself.
Finally, I am able to go after what I want.
