37: 5 Business (and Life) Lessons Learned in 2020

lessons learned

Wait… is it the end of 2020?!

This is the last episode of the year, and what a year it’s been. I know that a lot of us have been looking forward to the end of this year, but some of us have also experienced a lot of prosperity this year, and it can be really hard to reconcile those feelings.

Today I am unpacking my five biggest lessons learned in 2020. Because if we’re not learning, we’re not growing. And I think it’s really important to take a moment before we start making plans and setting goals for 2021, to look back and reflect on what went well and what didn’t go well in the last year.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The value of reflecting on the last year
  • The power of the cyclical nature of our bodies and minds
  • Why you don’t have to be your best self every day
  • Understanding that goals are dreams with a plan
  • Asking yourself “do you want to be right or do you want to be effective?”
  • Why you can’t go backward
  • Getting specific with measuring success

I want you to set goals and I want you to celebrate the many, many wins that you have on your journey. Head over to the Free Mama Movement Facebook group, use #freemamawin, and share every single one of them with us.

Happy New Year, and I will see you in 2021.

Passive income

Are you trying to generate more income while also spending more time with your family?

Today we’re joined by the amazing Lisa Johnson, who is a master at doing just that.

Lisa is a multi-seven-figure business coach specializing in helping entrepreneurs scale their businesses using passive income from memberships and courses.

After a tough childhood spent in social housing, Lisa went on to have successful careers in law, banking, and the entertainment industry. Her background in overcoming obstacles has helped to mold her into a bold, straight-talking coach who is never afraid to be an authentic and outspoken truth-teller.

She’s a huge believer that anyone can become a success no matter their background, and is known for her anti-bullying campaigning online.

I’m super excited to dive into passive income with her because I think it’s a term that gets thrown around a ton, but that we don’t always get the nitty gritty on. We’re also talking about the challenges of starting a business, being the realest version of yourself, and understanding your money mindset.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The value of a good coach
  • Going from $30,000 in debt to running a successful business
  • Using passive income to work less hours and spend more time with family
  • Showing up as the real and honest version of yourself
  • How to show who you really are while positioning yourself as an expert when you’re new
  • Lisa’s book recommendations
  • The myth of work-life balance
  • How to persevere through the early stages
  • The importance of consistency
  • Why you need to understand your money mindset

This episode is packed with so much goodness. Lisa absolutely knows what she’s talking about and we see eye-to-eye on so many things, which I just love and I think you will too.

Don’t forget to grab her free resource, 6 Months of FB Lives, especially if you’re working on showing up more consistently for your audience.

35: Launches Are Overrated. Here’s Why.

Launch

Are you waiting for the perfect time to launch? What if the perfect time is right now?

Today I’m talking about why you should not be waiting until 2021 to start your business. I think launches are incredibly overrated, and I’m going to tell you why.

We are in the home stretch of 2020. I know you might be thinking that you are so done with this year, and you just want it to be 2021, but I want to reframe that a little.

There are still several weeks of 2020 left, so why waste them? You don’t have to wait until 2021 to launch your business or chase your dreams just because it’s a new year. You can start right now. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second-best time is now.

In Today’s Episode, We Discuss:

  • Why I don’t like the term “launch”
  • How to start today
  • Why you don’t need to have all the things done to start selling
  • Recovering from perfectionism
  • Overcoming a fear-based mentality
  • How to stop making excuses

Let’s finish 2020 with a bang. Do the thing you want to do, and do it now. We’ll all be here cheering you on.

Why You Need to Quit Consuming and Start DOING!

Do you feel overwhelmed by ALL the information you are being hit with on a daily basis? Do you find your time just slipping away before you’re able to actually get anything done?

Don’t panic. There’s a reason and a solution for this.

When you are first starting a business, it feels like there is so much to learn. This episode is all about how to not get overwhelmed with all of the content available on the internet.

There is a LOT of content out there. And I’m going to talk about a conversation I was having with a Free Mama who felt like she couldn’t get past consuming and just start doing.

I totally get it, so today on Free Mama Radio, we’re going to explore why we get stuck in that consuming stage, and how to get past it.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Getting past the consuming stage
  • Using your time efficiently
  • Why you have to create more than you consume
  • How to become a creator
  • Spreading yourself too thin
  • The importance of being intentional about what you consume
  • Setting boundaries

Mama, I just wanted you to know that I appreciate you and that the work that you are doing right now is making you better. It’s making your family better. And then your family goes out and does better in the community. You add value to your clients’ lives with the problems that you solve and I’m so incredibly proud of you!

30: Creating Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in Our Communities with Charmin Rickards and LaDonna Sanders Redmond

Today’s episode of Free Mama Radio was previously recorded during the Diversity in Business panel at Free Mama Live. It was too good to keep private, so we’re sharing it here today.

Of course, diversity goes well beyond business, but to keep it in alignment with our responsibility as business owners, mothers, and humans, we knew that this was a conversation that needed to be included in our community.

I sat down with two professionally trained inclusion and diversity experts, and you’re going to hear all about their background and how they got into this line of work, as well as some really hard and uncomfortable but oh so important questions and topics.

Charmin Rickards is a retired Lieutenant Commander who served over 22 years in the United States Navy. Before she retired, she served as Deputy Diversity Officer, which launched her career in diversity and inclusion. Today she works in affirmative employment program management for the federal government.

LaDonna Sanders Redmond is a food justice activist. She started working in the world of food justice because her son developed food allergies at a very early age. She helps build fair food systems and food access for communities.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • What diversity and inclusion means
  • The difference between diversity, inclusion, and equality
  • Having self awareness
  • Improving communication to be able to talk through differences
  • Why learning is a lifelong process
  • Practicing talking through conflict
  • The importance of noticing the diversity that is already around you
  • How to see around your bias
  • How having a prosperity mindset can help you to be inclusive

It starts with us, folks. We have to better ourselves before we can better the world around us.

I hope you enjoyed listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed hosting it, and that you have some ideas about what you can do to make your business a more inclusive space.

29: How To Leverage Your Past Education and Life Experiences To Create A Profitable Business With Natalie Gingrich

education

Do you sometimes struggle to reconcile the money you invested in higher education or the time you spent in corporate with where you are at now?

Let’s talk about how all of those things can work together.

I’m super excited to be here today with my friend, Natalie Gingrich. Natalie is the founder and host of The Ops Authority and has been in operation for two decades, either in health care, corporate America, or as an entrepreneur. She developed the Director of Operations Certification to equip existing ops experts to transform their businesses.

Natalie is sharing what it was like to transition from healthcare, to corporate, to entrepreneurship, and how lessons from those earlier career paths play a role in her business today. We’re talking about priorities, mom guilt, fear of failure, and of course what it takes to be an operations professional.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Having a quarter-life crisis
  • Going from $180,000 in debt to running a successful business
  • Lessons learned from working in a corporate environment
  • How confidence creates momentum and momentum creates money
  • Monetizing the things that come naturally to you
  • Preventing drive from pushing out the things that really matter to you
  • Overcoming fear of failure
  • Why you have to be persistent
  • How to become an operations professional
  • The importance of understanding your values

A lot of the time, the path our lives will take is unclear to us, right? You might wonder why you got a master’s degree in healthcare, or spent fifteen years in corporate America to end up in Entrepreneurship.

But take time to connect the dots. Do you still use the skills you learned back then in your business today? Probably so!

You are exactly where you’re supposed to be mama!

Showing up

Are you showing up imperfectly in your business? Or are you stuck feeling like your offer isn’t ready or good enough to put out into the world?

In this episode we’re going to talk about why you just have to get it out there, and to talk us through that, is Brooke Markevicius.

Brooke is the founder and CEO of Allobee, which you might know as Momentum Market before they rebranded. It is a one-stop business solution for solopreneurs, small business owners, and startup founders. Brooke is passionate about supporting moms and businesses, so she fits right in around here.

Today we’re going to be talking a lot about the importance of just showing up and continuing to show up imperfectly. If you are always waiting for your business to be perfect, you will never start. But when you start showing up, you will learn and grow and keep getting better and better.

Brooke is also sharing her journey from working at a non-profit, to being one of Postmates first 100 employees, to freelancing and running Allobee.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • How women are being forced out of the workforce in the pandemic
  • Having a figure-it-out attitude
  • Being a go-getter
  • Why you have to be okay with failure
  • Living a shame-free life
  • Setting boundaries on how you spend your time
  • Why she decided to rebrand
  • Paying attention to what your market wants

Deciding to show up and keep showing up even when you don’t have everything figured out is a challenge, but here’s the thing. . . No-one has everything figured out! And it’s in the showing up that we learn and get better.

Brooke is a wonderful example of this, and it’s an honor to have her on the podcast today to teach us ways of showing up imperfectly in our businesses!
